The article is devoted to the study of the pragmatic load of affirmative and negative forms of verbal predicates in the eighth chapter of the science fiction novel by K. Vonnegut «Slaughterhouse number five». It is specified that for the investigated text fragment the wedging of predicates of the present tense in the narration which is shined from a position of the last time is characteristic.
Docking predicates of present and past tenses reflects the concept of the category of temporality inherent in the protagonist. The rare use of negation operators in front of verbal predicates in the context of the narrative sheds light on the fatalism of the protagonist, his acceptance of war as an inevitable phenomenon. The research method used in this study sheds light on how K. Vonnegut's sci-fi
narrative unfolds: the temporal structure of the eighth chapter reveals the dominance of the affirmative forms of verbal predicates of the past simple and perfect tense of the explanatory mood. Novelty of research consists in a pragmatic analysis of rare occurrences of predicates in the present simple time, which is wedged in the narrative about past events are indicators of the realization of the
category of time, the main character, for which a linear change of one moment, another moment appears an illusion: all temporal layers co-exist in one temporal point, inseparable from each other. The operators of negation in verbal predicates are found in the text fragment thirteen times, which is implicitly associated with the general fatalistic tone of the narrative: according to the author, people are not able and have no right to change their fate. In the perception of the main character, the category of time becomes especially unpredictable at the time of the tragic Dresden events, loses its balance and urgency, because no one knows what will
happen even in the next second. War gives rise to ontological uncertainty of human life forces, violated his orientation in time.
The main character, having witnessed the destruction of Dresden, having experienced a deep psychological trauma, for the rest of his life loses the ability to linear perception of the category of time. The narrative structure of this category, embedded in the text of the novel, reflects the discontinuity and unevenness of the unfolding of life time during active military events.
