The Language and National Linguistic World-Image: Analyzing the Problem of Their Correlation and Interrelatedness
The article scrutinizes the concept of the media language in its correlation with the national linguistic world-image. Analyzed are the mass communication language and its capacity to reflect the changes taking place in the national language and influence the addressee’s perception of reality both implicitly and explicitly. The pragmatic approach of the media language and its being stipulated by the national language peculiarity lead to the distortion of the facts of reality; to а specific kind of relationship between the addressee and the addresser. Since both the author and the recipient share the same linguistic consciousness, the former resorts to such language devices that are obvious and transparent to the latter. Hence, the process of manipulation becomes easier to handle.
Introduced are such concepts as ‘language (verbal) influence’, ‘manipulation’.
The main aim of the article is to demonstrate on specifically chosen instances the powerful influence the author can exert on a recipient by means of the shared language. As a result of this single-sided or one-way communication the addressee is affected immensely and is tricked into taking up the addresser’s views. Mass media language is analyzed as a strong means of propaganda and persuasion.
