Inter-Civilization Dialogue in the Context of Historical Memory

(Southern Federal University)

The article deals with the role of historical memory in the process of civilizational interaction. The author proceeds from the thesis that the globalization forms a "global" space the process of formation of that all civilizations are involved in. In such conditions, the interaction between civilizations increases that often leads to competition for cultural influence (S. Huntington) and conflicts of identities. Since the key component of cultural and national identity is the image of the past, it is justified to focus on the problem of memory in the context of the dialogue of civilizations. Based on the idea of P. Ricoeur about the "fragility" of
memory the forms in which images of the past can be a danger to fruitful interaction are revealed. The concept of dialogue and dialogical
memory (A. Assmann) are considered as a response to these challenges. In addition, there is another function that memory performs – security, as the appeal to the collective experience of the past sets certain vectors in the construction of inter-civilizational and intercultural relations in the categories of security, danger or threat. This article has been defined the concepts of memory in the context of interaction of civilizations can be used to analyze specific images of the past and their role in the dialogue of civilizations.
