Do Scots and English Share a Common Grammatical System: Examining the Pros and Cons?

studies are important not only in the fields of lexis and phonology, but also that of grammar. If the lexical composition and sound structure of the Scottish language has already been given a deep insight, the grammatical system has been
avoided by the scholars. The task is to list the main features of the morphology and syntax of this language and to try to determine to what extent its grammatical system actually coincides with the English one. To determine the area of comparative analysis, it is necessary to fi nd out which objects are to be compared in order to reliably establish a common set of morphological and syntactic features that determine the existing differences. The complexity of the task lies in the fact that two extremely unequal in its sociolinguistic status systems are compared. The preliminary result of the study consists in the fact that grammar “cuts the distance” between Scots and English, while vocabulary and phonology increase it.
