On Umar Aliev’s Contribution to the Establishment of Book Publishing of North Caucasus Highlander Nations
U.D. Aliev, the famous Karachay educator, made a signifi cant contribution to the establishment of book publishing in the languages of the highlander nations of North Caucasus. The regional vernacular publisher’s success in printing
books in the highlander languages was highly appraised by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and attracted interest of several European countries. The publisher received requests to send the books
in highlander languages from the University of Cologne, Cambridge, Oxford, and Budapest Universities, Paris institute for international culture and other foreign institutes. U.D. Aliev was the head of the North Caucasus department of the
Central Publisher from October, 1925, to February, 1930. Under his tenure, vernacular publishing houses have been opened in all seven autonomous regions of North Caucasus (Adygea, Ossetia, Kabardia, Karachai, Circassia, Chechnya
and Ingushetia). Umar Aliev was the person standing at the origins of book publishing in the languages of the highlander nations of North Caucasus.
